Jamie xx - "In Waves"

Record Reviews

Jamie xx In Waves Young

I don't know much about this dude's band, The xx. I got here via the Young Thug pipeline. Thugger was featured on the epic banger "I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times)" which was on Jamie's last record "In Color" that came out ten years ago! Time flys kids. I liked that record, I thought it was good but it didn't stay in rotation for me aside from "Gosh" and the Thugger song. I do also fuck with his Gil Scott-Heron remix record, it's pretty good.

But I think this record is great, I love it. Which suprised me, I didn't expect to love it this much. It's a great record to run or workout to. I think it really kinda made me put my guard down a little when it comes to house music, electro and whatever other genres are all mashed up together on here. Coming from a rock world and punk rock I've always been pretty selective with the electronic music I've listen to but I think those days are over. Thanks Mr. Jamie xx.

"In Waves" is a really big sounding record, it's slick, approachable and it's tasteful. The heaters for me being "Dafodil", "Waited All Night", "Still Summer", "That Feeling I Get From You", "Breather" and the lovely Alan Watts inspired "Falling Together."

Jamie you've won over this rockist with your swagonometry and I've got good news and bad news for you. The good news is I'm already on the list for your show at The Shrine January 23rd. The bad news is I need you to toss us a couple all access passes so we don't gotta buy $20 beers at The Shrine cuz Buddyhead is on a budget. Hell maybe we can crush a couple with you backstage, LFG!
